"Team EU" vann medaljkampen i OS

'Team EU' set to win Beijing Olympics

Following the provocative yet successful 'I want my flag back' Action sparked by JEF Europe (Young European Federalists) in response to the watering down of the symbols in the Lisbon Treaty last December, the Federalist youth have re-launched the campaign for the strengthening of European symbols through the European Olympic Team campaign – www.euolympics.eu.

The initiative aims to demonstrate the strength of European sport by counting together the European Union medals and supporting the creation of one 'European Olympic Team', able to compete and challenge world sport super powers like China and the United States. The European Olympic Team would have clearly won the competition, with 280 medals including 87 golds. For a full list please see www.euolympics.eu.

'The medal table speaks for itself;' commented Jacopo Barbati, co-ordinator of the initiative and member of the Federal Committee of JEF Europe. 'When counted together, the EU Olympic medals go well beyond those of China and the United States - demonstrating Europe's undeniable ability in sporting fields across the board. This is despite the fact that Europe has a considerably lower population than all of the well established sports super powers' Barbati continued.

Through the action JEF Europe takes the opportunity to express its attachment to the European values of freedom, democracy and solidarity; reaffirming the importance of the defence of Human Rights in China and the world.

'This initiative mirrors the campaign for a politically united and federal European Union' affirmed Samuele Pii, President JEF Europe. 'A Union able to promote and defend its interests through a common defence policy; a Union able to fight for freedom and democracy in the international scene through a united foreign policy; and a Union that can deliver and respond to the needs of its citizens with democratic and efficient institutions. The European Olympic Team initiative of today is a symbol and hope for an ever stronger and united Europe of tomorrow' concluded Samuele Pii.
